Volunteer Tutor Training Workshop Every quarter, ALP conducts workshops to train volunteers to teach literacy skills to adult learners. Generally, workshops are offered in September, January, and March, and sometimes during the summer, depending on demand. During the course of each 12-hour workshop, volunteers are introduced to the latest practices in adult literacy instruction and trained in the use of ALP's core curriculum, Laubach Way To English. The format of each workshop is a lively blend of lecture, video, discussion, demonstration, supervised practice, and lesson planning. Upon successful completion of the 12-hour workshop, volunteers receive certification as Volunteer Tutors through the world's oldest and largest nongovernmental literacy organization, ProLiteracy Worldwide. The workshop registration fee is $35 and covers the cost of the Tutor Training Handbook, Teacher Resource book, one-year membership to ALP, and a six-month membership to ProLiteracy Worldwide (scholarship help is available for volunteers who are not able to pay this cost). For those who want to take the training, but who will not be working with an ALP student, the workshop cost is $350.
