Literacy Resources

  • American Literacy Council provides resources and assistance to individuals and organizations who are involved in literacy initiatives throughout the America.  The organization has produced software and publications aimed at solving the problem of illiteracy in English speaking countries.

  • Dave's ESL Cafe is the Internet's meeting place for teachers and students from around the world.  Contains resources on numerous ESL topics such as grammar, pronunciation, games, vocabulary and writing--just to name a few.  A great resource for teachers who may be looking for opportunities to teach English in other parts of the world.

  • Learning Disabilities Association of America provides a list of multi-sensory structured language programs and methods for literacy providers.  Many of the programs listed here are based on the “Orton Gillingham-Stillman Approach.” ALP’s Multi-Sensory Program primarily uses the Slingerland Approach, which was developed by Beth Slingerland and is based on Orton-Gillingham techniques.

  • LINCS is the National Institute for Literacy's information search site for literacy resources and curricula across the LINCS Network and major national and international adult basic education and literacy sites.

  • Literacy Connections provides a wealth of information on reading, teaching and tutoring techniques, ESL literacy, and adult literacy.  There are resources that are useful for teachers and tutors.  Topics include the language experience approach, phonics, and word study.  Check out the subheading "Adult Literacy."

  • National Institute for Literacy is a federal organization that shares information about literacy and supports the development of high-quality literacy services so all Americans can develop essential basic skills.
