Volunteer Literacy Program One-On-One Tutoring Individual tutors meet with a learner three hours a week for six months to provide instruction in one or more of the following areas: reading, writing, speaking, and math. Small Classes: English-As-A-Second-Language (ESL) On site classes use ALP's core curriculum-- Laubach Way to English--to teach reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. The curriculum is spread over four levels, from beginning literacy to advanced intermediate. Additional classes in conversation, math and citizenship are also offered. Tutor Training Volunteers train volunteer tutors to use the core curriculum materials (Laubach Way to English) to teach individuals the English language. Another vital component of the training is to raise awareness of the distinctive aspects and sensitive nature of teaching adults. Volunteers who complete the training workshop become certified through ProLiteracy Worldwide. Volunteer Tutor Training Workshops are offered on a quarterly basis. Trainer Training Ongoing training is provided for all volunteer tutor trainers. Quarterly trainings provide the opportunity to keep training skills current and relevant while working towards meeting requirements for tutor certification through ProLiteracy Worldwide.
Computer Literacy ALP’s computer lab offer computer-assisted literacy instruction using English literacy software and multi-sensory reading software. Other skills taught include introduction to keyboarding, spelling and basic word processing. Open entry, open exit. No prior computer experience necessary.
Family Literacy Program This comprehensive Even Start program offers adult literacy instruction, early childhood development activities, parenting skills development, home visits and referrals to other community agencies.
Multi-Sensory Instruction Program - ABE This nationally recognized program offers on-site classes in beginning-level reading, writing and spelling for learners who speak English fluently but who struggle with learning difficulties. Instruction is “multi-sensory” in that it uses as many of the learner's senses (learning modalities) simultaneously, helping to compensate for any weaknesses. Instructors are certified in the Slingerland Method and also use Lindamood-Bell techniques to help learners develop phonemic awareness, phonics, handwriting, reading, writing, spelling and critical thinking skills. Multi-sensory instruction is especially effective for individuals who have problems with reading, spelling and other language issues.
