Job Description for Volunteer Tutors

Why Are Tutors Needed? To help an adult learn to read, write and/or speak English.

What Training Will I Receive? ALP conducts several Tutor Training Workshops throughout the year and volunteer teachers are required to attend one Training Workshop.  The schedule for the workshops is listed under Training Schedule.  Workshops are 12 hours total over several sessions, and volunteers need to attend every session to become certified.  Certification is granted by ALP through its affiliation with ProLiteracy Worldwide— the oldest and largest nongovernmental literacy organization in the world.

Where Will I Teach? Tutoring occurs in locations that are mutually acceptable to both tutor and student.  Tutoring may need to occur in the student’s home due to transportation and childcare challenges.  Other locations are available such as the library, community rooms and churches.

When Will I Teach? Tutors and students should meet two times a week for 1 ½ hours each session.  Schedules can be adjusted around vacations.

What Commitment Do I Need To Make? A 6-month commitment is required of volunteer tutors.  This length of time is necessary to build trust and for progress to occur.  This is a significant amount of your time, and we ask that you consider it carefully before volunteering.

What Qualifications Do I Need? Volunteer tutors must know how to read, write, and speak the English language and be genuinely interested in helping another adult improve his/her literacy skills.  No prior teaching or tutoring experience is necessary.

What Materials Will I Use To Teach? ALP uses Laubach materials (Laubach Way to English) to provide a structured method for teaching adults basic reading, writing and speaking skills.  Laubach materials are clearly written and provide scripts.  Tutors also will be instructed how to develop lessons to meet specific needs of their student.

What Are The Rewards? Your efforts will open doors of opportunity for adults and you will make a lasting difference in another person’s life.  You may even make a life-long friendship!
