Job Description for Volunteer Teachers Why Are Teachers Needed? To help adults learn to read, write and/or speak English in a small class setting. Volunteers are essential and do roughly 65% of the teaching for ALP. What Training Will I Receive? ALP conducts several Teacher Training Workshops throughout the year and volunteer teachers are required to attend one Training Workshop. The schedule for the workshops is listed under Training Schedule. Workshops are 12 hours total over several sessions, and volunteers need to attend every session to become certified. Certification is granted by ALP through its affiliation with ProLiteracy Worldwide— the oldest and largest nongovernmental literacy organization in the world. Where Will I Teach? Teaching occurs in classrooms located at ALP. Other locations are sometimes used, such as churches, libraries, and community rooms. When Will I Teach? Classes meet two times a week for 1 ½ hours each session. ALP offers classes on a quarterly basis (winter, spring, summer and fall) and each quarter is ten weeks long. Classes generally meet either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. What Commitment Do I Need To Make? A two-class commitment is required of volunteer teachers. You may fulfill this commitment by teaching two classes in one quarter or one class over two separate quarters over the course of a year. This is a significant amount of your time, and we ask that you consider it carefully before volunteering. What Qualifications Do I Need? Volunteer teachers must know how to read, write, and speak the English language and be genuinely interested in helping another adult improve his/her literacy skills. No prior teaching experience is necessary. What Materials Will I Use To Teach? ALP uses Laubach materials (Laubach Way to English) to provide a structured method for teaching adults basic reading, writing and speaking skills. Laubach materials are clearly written and even provide scripts. Teachers may also use other available curriculums. What Are The Rewards? Your efforts will open doors of opportunity for adults and you will make lasting differences in the lives of others. You may even make some life-long friendships. |
