About ALP

The Anchorage Literacy Project (ALP) is a private, non-profit educational organization that has been serving the literacy needs in Anchorage since 1974.  ALP’s mission is to offer educational programs that help adults and their families build the literacy skills they need to function more effectively in their daily lives.  Each year as many as 1,000 learners receive English language and literacy instruction by attending classes or by being tutored, and each year ALP trains up to 100 community members to become volunteer tutors or classroom teachers.

ALP’s goals are: to provide adult learners with opportunities to meet their educational goals; to recruit, train, certify, and support volunteer teachers and tutors; to teach adults basic and English literacy skills; to collaborate with other agencies to better serve the needs of adult learners; and to promote community awareness of literacy issues.

ALP provides a full range of literacy services which include:

  •  Teaching basic reading, writing, spelling, and math skills to adults
  •  Conducting English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for immigrants and refugees
  •  Teaching citizenship and citizenship test preparation
  •  Providing one-on-one tutoring
  •  Providing family literacy instruction
  •  Training volunteer classroom teachers and tutors
